THE DISCIPLINE

What is clinical acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a medical technique originating in China, with over 2,000 years of history, which uses very fine needles to stimulate specific points on the body. This stimulation regulates the nervous system, modulates inflammation and activates the body’s own natural mechanisms to restore balance.

In our practice, we apply clinical acupuncture: we integrate Chinese tradition with modern medical physiology, choosing for each patient the system or combination of systems best suited to their case. We don’t just treat the symptom — we treat the cause that sustains it.

It is a safe, minimally invasive treatment that complements your usual medicine.

METHODS

The systems we use

Acupuncture has evolved into different schools and systems. In our practice we combine these five approaches according to the case and the patient’s response. You don’t have to choose them yourself: we select the most appropriate combination for your condition.

01

Tung Method

A family acupuncture system passed down through generations, with distal points (on the limbs) that provide rapid pain relief.

02

Tan Balance

Balanced acupuncture by Dr. Richard Tan, based on meridian balance. Treats pain with needles placed away from the affected area.

03

EAM Steiner

Sports Medical Acupuncture, integrating Western medicine with neurological points. Especially effective for musculoskeletal injuries.

04

YNSA

Dr. Yamamoto's scalp acupuncture, with points on the head that mirror the entire body. Useful for neurological pain, paralysis and stroke sequelae.

05

Ryodoraku

A Japanese electroacupuncture system that measures the electrical conductance of the meridians for objective diagnosis and personalised treatment.

THE PROCESS

How a session works, step by step

1

Step 1 · First visit and clinical history

On the first visit we review your medical history, your symptoms and goals. If needed, we look at previous reports and lab results.

2

Step 2 · Diagnosis and treatment plan

We outline which combination of systems we'll use, the estimated number of sessions and the frequency. We explain everything clearly.

3

Step 3 · Acupuncture session

Each session lasts around 30–45 minutes. We insert very fine needles at specific points. Most patients report a sensation of deep relaxation.

4

Step 4 · Periodic reassessment

Every 4–6 sessions we review progress and adjust the plan. If needed, we integrate other centre treatments (PNI, micro-immunotherapy, ozone therapy).

5

Step 5 · Maintenance

Once the goal has been reached, we assess whether spaced maintenance sessions are needed or whether you can be discharged from treatment.

SAFETY

A safe and regulated practice

When practised by qualified professionals using appropriate materials, acupuncture is one of the medical techniques with the best safety profile. These are the pillars that make it so safe.

🩺

Qualified medical practice

Sessions are performed by a registered doctor with specific training in clinical acupuncture and integrative medicine.

🧪

Sterile single-use material

We use sterile, very thin gauge, single-use needles, individually sealed and disposed of as medical waste.

📋

Thorough prior history-taking

Before any session we review your clinical history to rule out contraindications (anticoagulants, pacemaker, pregnancy, etc.).

⚖️

Compatible with your medication

Acupuncture does not interfere with most pharmacological treatments. We coordinate the plan with your usual doctor when needed.

AT THE CENTRE

Acupuncture within an integrative approach

Acupuncture tradicional xinesa a Andorra - tractament al Centre Mèdic Dr. Aldosa

At Centre Mèdic Dr. Aldosa, acupuncture is not an isolated technique. We use it as one tool within an integrative approach, often combined with other disciplines at the centre to enhance results.

  • Acupuncture + PNI · For chronic cases that call for investigating the underlying causes (gut, hormones, nervous system) and regulating them at the root.
  • Acupuncture + Ozone therapy · For chronic inflammatory conditions and pain with an oxidative component, to amplify the effect on the tissue.
  • Acupuncture + Joint regeneration · In joint pain and injuries, to speed up recovery and improve mobility.
  • Acupuncture + Micro-immunotherapy · For allergies, recurrent infections and immune fatigue, to modulate the immune system through a dual route.
OUR APPROACH

Why our acupuncture is different

Trained in multiple systems

Mastery of Tung, Tan Balance, EAM Steiner, YNSA and Ryodoraku, to choose the best approach for each case rather than always applying the same protocol.

Integrative medical perspective

We don't just treat local symptoms: we assess whether acupuncture should be combined with other centre treatments to act on the cause.

Personalised treatment plan

No standard packages. We design a plan with clear goals, an estimated number of sessions and reassessment criteria.

Quality material and practice

High-quality needles, a properly equipped clinical space and unhurried sessions: each patient gets the time they need.

Coordination with your doctor

If you're under the care of another specialist, we coordinate the plan to ensure everything pulls in the same direction.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Acupuncture needles are extraordinarily fine (much thinner than an injection needle). Most patients feel only a slight pressure or a sensation of warmth at the moment of insertion. Some areas of the body are more sensitive than others, but overall it is not a painful technique.

It depends on the condition and your response. For acute issues, 3–6 sessions may be enough. For chronic conditions, we often plan an initial cycle of 6–10 sessions with reassessment afterwards. We discuss this honestly at the first visit.

The first visit usually lasts between 45 and 60 minutes (history-taking + treatment). Follow-up sessions last around 30–45 minutes.

Acupuncture has very few absolute contraindications. Extra care is needed in patients on anticoagulants, during pregnancy (for some points), with pacemakers (in case of electroacupuncture) or with active skin infections. We assess this at the first visit.

Side effects are rare and mild: occasionally a small localised bruise or a slight feeling of tiredness afterwards. Most patients report a sense of relaxation and well-being after the session.

Yes. Acupuncture is supported by a large body of medical literature, particularly for chronic pain, migraine, nausea, anxiety and several functional disorders. The WHO recognises it as a useful technique in various conditions.

In the vast majority of cases, yes. Acupuncture does not interfere with medications and often allows, over time, dose adjustments together with your usual doctor (never on your own). We coordinate the plan with your reference physician when needed.

Yes — this is one of its most evidence-supported indications. Stimulation of certain points regulates the autonomic nervous system and helps shift you towards a calmer state. It often improves sleep quality too.

Some private insurance plans cover acupuncture sessions performed by registered doctors. We recommend checking directly with your provider. We issue an invoice to facilitate reimbursement where applicable.

No special preparation is needed. We recommend coming well hydrated, neither fasting nor right after a heavy meal, and wearing comfortable clothes. After the session, it’s a good idea to drink water and avoid intense physical effort for a few hours.
